400 amp service upgrades for large Grand Rapids homes with heavy loads

Some homes simply outgrow 200 amps: two EV chargers, heat pumps, a pool heater, a workshop and a big kitchen running together. A 400 amp service splits the house across two 200 amp panels, and it involves the utility far more than a normal upgrade. We run the load calculation, coordinate with Consumers Energy, and plan the changeover.

Quick answer

A 400 amp service upgrade in Grand Rapids usually installs a 400 amp class meter base feeding two 200 amp panels, for large homes carrying several heavy loads such as multiple EV chargers, heat pumps, pools and workshops. The utility often has to upgrade its transformer or service drop. Regional costs commonly run $3,000 to $6,000, before utility-side work.

What this job is

When 200 amps is genuinely not enough

Most homes do not need 400 amps, even with an EV charger. A load calculation often shows a 200 amp service with load management will carry the plan. Where it genuinely will not, typically large homes with two chargers, electric heat, a pool and a shop, 400 amp service is the answer. We show you the numbers either way, rather than recommending the biggest service by default.

Cost factors

What moves the price on this job

The utility work and the panel layout decide most of the price.

Typical regional ranges: 400 amp service upgrades $3,000 to $6,000, before any utility-side charges. Planning figures, not our price.

The versions of this job

Dual 200 amp panels

A 400 amp residential service is usually built as a 400 amp class meter base with two 200 amp main disconnects feeding two panels. Circuits are split between them so the heavy loads are balanced: often one panel for the main house and one for the garage, chargers, pool and shop. We plan the split with the load calculation, place both panels where they have clear working space, and label every circuit so it is obvious which panel feeds what.

Large home with EV and heat pump

Two EV chargers and a heat pump are the combination that most often pushes a large home past 200 amps, because all three can run for hours at the same time on a winter evening. We calculate those loads alongside the range, dryer and water heater, test whether load management would do the job, and only then recommend the larger service. Where 400 amps is right, the chargers and heat pump go on circuits planned for them from the start.

Workshop and pool loads

Pools bring pumps, heaters and lighting; workshops bring welders, compressors and dust collection. Together with a large house they can exceed a 200 amp service on a busy afternoon. In a 400 amp setup, these loads usually move to the second panel, which keeps them from affecting the house and simplifies future additions. Pool bonding and GFCI requirements are handled as part of the same job, so nothing has to be reopened. A spa circuit can be planned into the same panel if one is on the wish list.

Utility transformer coordination

The utility side is what makes a 400 amp upgrade different. The existing transformer or service drop may be too small, and Consumers Energy has to size and schedule its own work. We submit the load information the utility asks for, coordinate the disconnect, meter and reconnect dates, and schedule the inspection so the new service can be energized as soon as the utility's crew has upsized their equipment, with the house off power for the shortest possible window that day.

Local conditions

Why this looks different across Grand Rapids

After the June 2026 wind storms, Consumers Energy had more than 100,000 customers out statewide and staged extra crews in Walker. Utility crews are the constraint on any service change that needs transformer work, so on a 400 amp job we get the utility request in first and avoid scheduling the changeover in the middle of storm season if the house can wait.

Time on site

How long a 400 amp upgrade takes

The on-site changeover is usually one to two days, but the utility sets the overall schedule, because a 400 amp service often needs a larger transformer or a new service drop. We submit the utility request early, plan the interior work so it is ready when the utility is, and keep the power-off window as short as the sequence allows.
