Panels and Electrical Service
Electrical panel upgrades from 100 to 200 amps in Grand Rapids
A panel upgrade is the job that makes the next five projects possible. We start with a load calculation so you know whether you need one at all, then replace the panel and service, book the Consumers Energy disconnect, and get it inspected so the power is off for hours, not days.

Quick answer
An electrical panel upgrade in Grand Rapids usually means moving from 60 or 100 amp service to 200 amps: a new panel, often a new meter base and service entrance, an outdoor emergency disconnect under current Michigan code, and updated grounding. Most regional upgrades run $1,300 to $3,000, more when the meter and mast change.
What this job is
Do you actually need a bigger panel?
Not always. A full panel with no spare spaces is a space problem, which a subpanel can solve. A panel that cannot carry the load you want to add is a capacity problem, which only a service upgrade solves. The load calculation tells you which one you have, and whether an EV charger or heat pump can go in with load management instead. We run it before quoting anything.
Cost factors
What moves the price on this job
Whether the meter and service entrance change is the biggest factor.
Typical regional ranges: panel upgrades to 200 amps $1,300 to $3,000 (full span $800 to $4,000); Michigan panel upgrades $1,113 to $3,339; full service upgrades with meter base and mast $3,000 to $6,000; permits $50 to $300. Planning figures, not our price.
- 01
Panel only or full service
New meter base and mast add the most.
- 02
Existing amperage
Moving up from 60 amps usually means more rewiring.
- 03
Panel location
Relocating a panel adds wire and labor.
- 04
Outdoor disconnect
Required under the current Michigan code.
- 05
Grounding and bonding
New rods and bonds where missing.
- 06
Circuits to move
Many circuits or old wiring take longer.
- 07
Permit and utility
Permit fees and the utility's schedule.

Choosing between them
Three ways to get the capacity you need
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 200 amp service upgrade | EV, heat pump, induction, additions | Utility disconnect and a full day's work |
| Subpanel | A full panel with spare capacity | Adds spaces, not capacity |
| Load management device | One large new load on a tight service | Limits that load when the house is busy |
| 400 amp service | Large homes with several big loads | Dual panels and utility transformer work |
The versions of this job
100 to 200 amp upgrade
Most Grand Rapids homes built before 1980 were wired for 100 amps or less, which was plenty until kitchens, heat pumps and chargers arrived. A 200 amp upgrade replaces the panel and usually the meter base and service entrance cable, and the utility upsizes its side as needed. We schedule the Consumers Energy disconnect and reconnect, do the changeover in a single day where the job allows, and move every existing circuit to the new panel with fresh labels, so nothing in the house is left wondering which breaker it is on.
Load calculation
A load calculation adds up what the house actually uses and what you plan to add, using the method the electrical code sets out, not a guess from the panel label. It tells you whether the existing service can take an EV charger, a heat pump or an induction range, and it is the document an inspector expects to see behind a service change. When the numbers show the service can cope with load management, we tell you that and price it, rather than selling an upgrade you do not need yet.

Outdoor emergency disconnect
The 2023 Michigan Electrical Code, enforced since March 12, 2024, amended the rules so one- and two-family dwellings need an emergency disconnect in a readily accessible outdoor location on or within sight of the house. On a service upgrade that usually means a meter-main combination or a separate disconnect outside, so firefighters can cut power without entering. We include it in the price from the start, because it is part of what the inspector will look for on the day.
Grounding and bonding update
Older services often have a grounding electrode that no longer meets code, or bonding to the water pipe that was cut when plumbing was changed to plastic. A service upgrade is the time to fix both: new ground rods where required, a proper bond to metal water and gas piping, and a clean neutral and ground arrangement in the new panel. It is invisible once finished, but it is what lets breakers trip correctly and keeps metal pipes from carrying stray voltage.

Local conditions
How Grand Rapids homes shape this job
In the City of Grand Rapids, electrical contractors file permits through the Citizen Access system, and a service change is always permitted and inspected. Since the 2023 Michigan Electrical Code took effect in March 2024, that inspection includes the outdoor emergency disconnect, so we plan its location with you on the first visit rather than discovering a problem with it at the inspection.

If you are adding an EV charger, heat pump, induction range or addition, a load calculation tells you. Frequent main breaker trips and a full panel are also signs.
Usually one working day, depending on the utility's reconnect.
Typical regional ranges run $1,300 to $3,000, and $3,000 to $6,000 when the meter and mast are replaced.
Yes. Service changes are always permitted and inspected in Michigan.
Only if the problem is space, not capacity. The load calculation tells you which.
