Electrical panel replacement for worn, corroded and recalled panels in Grand Rapids

Some panels need replacing even when the house does not need more power: brands with a history of breakers that fail to trip, panels with water damage, or ones where replacement breakers no longer exist. We replace them cleanly, with more capacity if you want it, and label every circuit.

Quick answer

Electrical panel replacement in Grand Rapids swaps a worn, corroded, damaged or problem-brand panel, such as Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco, for a new one of the same or larger capacity. Regional costs commonly run $1,113 to $3,339 in Michigan, more if the meter base or service entrance also changes.

What this job is

Replacement is about condition, not just capacity

A panel can have plenty of capacity and still need replacing. Certain older brands have a documented history of breakers that do not trip reliably, some panels have rusted from basement moisture, and others simply have no replacement breakers available anymore. In those cases we replace the panel at the same size, or step up to 200 amps if a load calculation shows the house will need it soon.

Cost factors

What moves the price on this job

Whether the service entrance changes is the biggest factor.

Typical regional ranges: Michigan panel upgrades $1,113 to $3,339; panel upgrades to 200 amps $1,300 to $3,000; full service upgrades with meter base and mast $3,000 to $6,000. Planning figures, not our price.

  1. 01

    Panel only or full service

Meter and mast replacement add the most.

  2. 02

    Capacity

Stepping up to 200 amps adds service work.

  3. 03

    Circuit condition

    Heat-damaged wire must be replaced.

  4. 04

    Relocation

Moving the panel adds wire and wall work.

  5. 05

    Grounding

    Old grounding often needs updating.

Required on new services under current code.

  7. 07

The versions of this job

Federal Pacific and Zinsco replacement

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels are the two brands most often flagged by home inspectors and insurers, because of breakers that may not trip under overload and bus connections that can overheat. We do not try to repair them with replacement breakers of uncertain origin. We replace the whole panel, move every circuit to correctly sized new breakers, and give you the permit and inspection record insurers and buyers usually ask for once a problem brand has been reported.

Corroded or rusted panel

Basement panels near sump pits, dryer vents or leaking pipes can rust from the inside. Corroded bus bars and breakers do not make reliable contact, which leads to heat, flicker and breakers that trip for no reason. We find and fix the moisture source with you, replace the panel, and relocate it if the spot will stay damp. Rust stains on the cover or water marks inside are the signs to call, even if everything still seems to work normally.

Recalled breaker panels

Some panel lines have had recalls or have long been discontinued, so replacement breakers are hard to find or come from unknown sources. Using breakers not listed for a panel is a code violation and a real risk. When we find a discontinued or recalled panel, we tell you plainly, explain what the concern is, and price a replacement, so decisions are based on the actual equipment in your basement rather than a rumor from a home report or a neighbor's story.

Same-amperage swap

When the house has enough capacity, a like-for-like replacement keeps the job simpler: the panel changes, often without touching the meter or service entrance, and the power is off for a shorter time. We still check every circuit as it moves, replace any heat-damaged conductors, correct double taps and missing grounds, and leave the new panel with spare spaces, so the next project does not start with a full panel and another conversation about capacity a year or two from now.

Local conditions

Local conditions that change the work

Michigan's 2023 electrical code carries forward the 2023 NEC's expanded requirements for EV charging equipment and energy storage systems. When a Grand Rapids panel is replaced anyway, it is worth sizing it with a charger or battery backup in mind, so we run the load calculation first and show you exactly what a larger panel would allow later on, before anything is ordered.
